I enjoy helping people understand and engage with what is going on in their business, so they're not worrying about it and they can then spend more time doing what they love to do.

My typical day involves meeting or speaking with customers, talking about their goals, and breaking things down to see how we can achieve those goals together. When I'm not face-to-face with customers I'm working behind the scenes to get them results, this might be preparing the financial reports for our meetings, or researching and drafting tax advice on tax issues. Outside of work, I like to keep active - in summer I'd go out for a jog up a hill and in winter join a spin class.
People don't go into business to spend their time worrying about tax or their cash flow. They start their business because they are passionate about what they do. What I enjoy about my job is helping people understand and engage with what is going on in their business, so they're not worrying about it and they can then spend more time doing what they love to do. This is usually being a sounding board and translating financial information into an action plan - but at the end of the day I love helping them get to where they want to be.
I really enjoyed accounting when I was at high school, and when I realised you could use it to help businesses thrive, I thought that would be the career for me. At RightWay, everyone in the team focuses on our customers and interacting with them daily - it's such a core part of the culture and the job. It's the daily interactions with our customers that brought me to RightWay and accounting as a job overall, it's not what you'd expect from your typical accountant.
I had a customer who I assisted through an IRD review and negotiated between them and IRD on resolving a tax issue. An IRD review isn't an easy process - having to navigate your way through the issues and be able to come to a solution can create worry and uncertainty. I was able to help my customer understand the issues throughout this process, which meant less stress and worry throughout the negotiation for them!
I'm fortunate enough to have thrown a dinner party recently for a Game of Thrones season 8 premiere with everyone from our co-working space I work from. Dinner was a pot luck with GoT themed food and drink (like dragon-blood!). Wouldn't have changed a thing!
A nice getaway to South East Asia - there's culture everywhere but it's also very easy to put your feet up with a beer, it's the perfect holiday!
Understanding the drivers of a business is key to understanding how to change it going forward. Have a question in your mind when reading a financial report - "what is causing this amount to be the way it is?".
Sneakers - I like to keep things casual.
Country - that's why I love the Nelson region, you get awesome bars and restaurants but with a more relaxed feel and amazing countryside.
